Under Pressure: Check Your Car's Cooling System

As a car owner, you understand how important routine maintenance is to the safety and longevity of your family’s car, but many systems can be confusing and require the assistance of a mechanic. One system you can check yourself is the cooling system, and listed below are ways to inspect this system to make sure it is operating at its best:

  • Visual Inspection - You can check many of the cooling system components through a visual inspection. Check to make sure there is the proper amount of coolant and visually inspect belts and hoses to make sure they are not showing any signs of wear including bulging, cracking, frayed, glazed or splitting. This simple task can be performed once a month.
  • Radiator Cap - The radiator cap is an important part of the cooling system that is often overlooked. Check the radiator cap to make sure seal is not showing signs of damage like cracking; if it is, time for a new radiator cap. If the radiator cap seal is damaged, it will not maintain proper pressure - causing the cooling system to malfunction. Never remove the radiator cap while the engine is hot! Keep in mind that it is under pressure.
